Circle Creek Fish Passage Project

Goals

Goals of the project are to:

  1. Restore passage to upper reaches of Circle Creek - main spawning tributary of the Necanicum River for wild coho as well as steelhead, cutthroat and lamprey - by replacing undersized and perched culvert on private timber land along US Highway 101 between Seaside and Cannon Beach, OR with open-bottom arch.
  2. Compliment other TU-sponsored projects on Circle Creek: the Circle Creek Confluence Project downstream sponsored by the Tualatin Valley TU Chapter, and the Upper Circle Creek road decommission project upstream.

Tactics

  1. Develop partnership with private timber company with ownership of project areas with significant fish benefit; highlight common interests of culvert replacement (lower road maintenance costs).
  2. Replacement of undersized, perched culvert with adequately sized, open-bottom arch culvert.

Victories

  1. Culvert successfully replaced, sharing costs with landowner
  2. Linkage between projects in lower watershed and in upper watershed by providing passage in between them
  3. Mutually beneficial partnership with major landowner
